The Shan: Refugees Without A Camp
A lunchtime talk with Bernice Johnson

1pm, Tuesday November 6, 2012
Members: Free, Non Members: 150 BHT

In 2001 Bernice Koehler Johnson came to Thailand to teach English to Shan refugees from Myanmar. A mother of two boys from the American state of Minnesota, she travelled to Thailand to escape the brutal northern winter, and ended up falling in love with the young people she taught.

She has returned to Thailand every year to teach and help her Shan students and their education or projects, bringing money from friends in the US and Canada to support the schooling of Shan children and youths. Bernice has written about her former students, her travels in Thailand and Burma in her book, "The Shan: Refugees Without a Camp".

Nation journalist Jim Pollard will provide background about the humanitarian crisis on the Thai Burma border and some of the outstanding people helping the Shan, plus Karen and other refugees from Myanmar

Join us for an event sure to be both illuminating and entertaining.
