Members interested in the possible treaty-level changes of the International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs), which could affect companies and users across the Internet ecosystem worldwide, are invited to attend an informal coffee roundtable with Ambassador David Gross, who presently is the Chair of the Ad Hoc World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) Working Group, representing a group of companies that have come together to monitor proposals and developments, share information, and work together to educate regulators, consumers and thought leaders on the WCIT/Inter Telecommunications Union (ITU) process.
As the final APT prep meeting convenes here this week prior to the WCIT 2012, which will be taking place in Dubai during December 3 - 14 this year, Ambassador Gross will be in Bangkok to provide commentary and reactions to the discussions and outcomes, which will surely hint at what's to come out of Dubai in December. Ambassador Gross urges revisions to the Internet Telecommunications Regulations to reflect what has proven to work for billions of internet users for two decades and to support competition and innovation in the private sector - this model has led to the massive growth and expansion of the Internet, especially in Asia which has become the region with the largest number of Internet users in the world. This growth has led to a wave of investment that has provided to the world new services, new content and new economic opportunities for billions of people. Ambassador Gross warns that expanding the jurisdiction of the UN's ITU to include the Internet will be unproductive and harmful.
