The Network for Human Rights Documentation - Burma (ND-Burma) is releasing a new report documenting the Government of Burma's use of torture and ill treatment against its own people since the November 2010 elections. Despite being bound by international human rights treaties and norms, Burma has no domestic legislation or independent judiciary, and an ineffective human rights commission that cannot address such violations. Torture and ill treatment are committed with impunity - a climate that poses a significant hurdle for Burma's democratic transition.
The report documents 83 cases of torture and ill treatment that have taken place in detention centers where political prisoners are interrogated and held, and in ethnic nationality areas where the Burma Army is actively engaged in armed conflict.
A panel of speakers will present the overall findings of the report and explain the nature of these violations with regards to political prisoners as well as ethnic nationality communities, especially women and children. The speakers will be:
Twan Zaw (All Arakan Students' and Youths' Congress)
Min Min (Assistance Association for Political Prisoners - Burma)
Hkawng Seng Pan (Kachin Women's Association - Thailand)
