By-elections and Media Reform in Myanmar: the View from Inside

8pm, Monday March 26, 2012
(Please see pricing and reservation procedure below)
A week out from parliamentary by-elections regarded by observers as a litmus test of Myanmar's reform agenda, The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand will host a panel discussion with journalists from inside Myanmar - a rare chance to hear how the country's much-commented reforms - and the by-elections - are seen from the inside.

Thiha Saw is an experienced and prominent journalist in Yangon, and is founder/editor of Open News Weekly Journal and Myanmar Dhana Business Magazine. He will be joined by one of Myanmar's younger media figures, Aung Ye Maung Maung, Editor-in-Chief at United Media Group.

From March 19-21, media and officials from inside and outside Burma discussed a new press law, the latest in a series of proposed reforms by the Myanmar government. Will the new press laws end the country's notorious restrictions on press freedom, which saw 13 journalists from Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) jailed, before being released in a mass freeing of political prisoners on Jan 13th last? And will the changes allow long-exiled journalists - until recently deemed 'enemies of the state' - work in their home country?

Last week, DVB's Thailand bureau chief Toe Zaw Latt made his first visit back to Myanmar in almost a quarter-century to attend the media conference. He will give his perspective on the future of media in Myanmar - and on the Myanmar exiled media - along with our two panelists 'from the inside'. He will be joined by Aung Zaw, founder and editor of The Irrawaddy, another well-known Myanmar exile media publication, who also participated in the government's March 19-21 media law discussions.
