The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand expresses its deepest condolences to the family and many colleagues and friends of Mike Stead, who has died in the UK after a short illness.
A lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club and passionate tennis player, Mike worked on the Kuwait Times and the Gulf Daily News in the late 1970s, then moved to the Bangkok Post in about 1981.
With Thailand's stock market developing, and unprecedented foreign investment flowing into the country, he left the Post in the late 1980s to edit analysts' reports for a local stockbroker. He went on to work for Yuanta Securities, Maybank Kim Eng, and Tisco Securities, and latterly for insideasean.com. He was planning to retire in January.
Mike realized he was unwell after playing a game of tennis in Bangkok on 7 July, and was diagnosed with terminal cancer three days later. He returned to his family in Liverpool on 22 July, and his condition worsened rapidly.
Funeral arrangements will be announced on Mike's Facebook page (Michael Paul Stead).
