Film: Green
A special screening of the acclaimed documentary and a talk on the illegal wildlife trade
8pm Tues, February 9, 2010

"Green", screened at the FCCT, tracks the fate of a female orang-utan rescued from her devastated natural habitat. Its unique and powerful treatment has stunned film and TV audiences around the world, and it has so far collected as many as 17 awards including the prestigious "Best of Festival" at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival in the USA.
There is no narration in this film. No words are necessary as the camera shifts between the orang-utan lying semi-comatose in a bleak concrete room, to the lush, rich and varied forests which were once her home. The endangered orang-utan is a symbol of the terrible destruction being wrought in forests far from the eyes of most of the population, in the name of keeping our current lifestyles alive. At the end of the film is a list of corporations complicit in this ongoing tragedy. It is a long list indeed.
The 48-minute film is being screened with the kind permission of film maker Patrick Rouxel.
Speaking after the film will be
Edwin Wiek, the Thailand-based wildlife and animal welfare activist and director of Wildlife Friends of Thailand to whom turbulence and controversy is nothing new. His latest battle is with the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi, whose authorities have sued him and two others for defamation.
Join us for a film whose haunting images will stay with you for a long time to come; and for a look at the sordid insides of the unscrupulous trade in wildlife for human entertainment and profit.
