Veteran Cambodia Daily reporter Saing Soenthrith in dire financial straits

Veteran Cambodia Daily reporter Saing Soenthrith has been diagnosed with serious kidney problems that require regular dialysis costing $80 per session. Rith is now on medical leave and no longer drawing a salary.

Some of his former colleagues set up a fundraising campaign nine months ago when Rith was first diagnosed. While the money has been helpful, it has fallen short of the sustained support he needs. Between dialysis thrice weekly, medication, and blood transfusions, Rith's medical costs total about $300 a week. School fees for his three children have also added to the financial burden.

Some of you may have worked with Rith as a fixer over the years, while others may be familiar with his hard-hitting reportage for the Daily. Like many independent journalists in Cambodia, Rith could have taken safer, better paid jobs at many moments in his career. He stayed a journalist because he believed in the profession and the change it could effect in his country.
